Unbeknownst to them, these different souls will share the same stage in a play written by Fate, one which involves the themes of love, tragedy, and redemption. The characters in the movie are fictitious except for Theresa Chan. Deaf and blind since she was 14, Theresa who is now 61 is a remarkable woman who has triumphed over her disabilities to live an amazing life. She is the film's beacon, a symbol of strength and hope.

Blue Gate Crossing 2002 - (Drama/Romance, Taiwan, 85 min)








Bold tomboy Lin and pretty, reserved Meng are Taiwanese high school girls whose extremely close friendship revolves around Meng's crush on Zhang (Bo-Lin Chen), the popular star of the boys' swim team. When Lin takes it upon herself to act as the go-between for her friend, Zhang and Lin begin spending time together. Though Lin attempts to envision herself with him, her true romantic feelings are for her girlfriend Meng.

Do you remember what you have done when you are 17? If it is similar to how i remembered mine, then this movie would invoke alot of memories. Isn't life like that: simple, un-eventful, yet confusing and full of uncertainties?

I applaud the way the director handled this coming-of-age movie. He managed to touch a really heavy topic like homosexuality without throwing it into our face. He had managed to keep everything simple, with no dramatic ups and downs, but accurately reflect the lives of 17 year olds. The lead characters may seem too sweet and innocent, but pretty accurate to people in Asia.

To keep the movie real, the director went to the streets and got the male lead Chen Bo-lin (Zhang Shi Hao) and the female lead Gui Lun Mei (Meng Ke Rou) and all of the other cast. And knowing that they were all first time actors really lifts up the mood of the movie. I say they did a great job. By the way, the name 'Meng Ke Rou' means 'fierce subdue the gentle' (although not the exact words, the pronunciation is similar), which to me is a subtle undertext to her character. The biggest applause goes to Gui who did a great job portraying in Meng's confusion and awkwardness, and her struggle to conform to society's standards.

Watch the movie for its simplicity, if you are looking for a plot heavy, technically driven movie, this is the wrong place. One of my fave movies of all times.

Brush Up My Sisters - 2003[ACTION][HONGKONG]





This is a disappointing action/comedy. The premise is that three girls join the police force and go to the academy for their own reasons. One wants to get a gun so that she can use it to kill the murderer of her sister. Another wants to join the force so she can be near the cop she secretly loves. The third is really a reporter and wants to write an expose on a lesbian scandal in the police force. Its the type of thing you've seen a dozen times before better and probably an equal number of times worse. "Livening" things up in the second half is the fact that one of the girls ends up in possession of some stolen jewels and it goes from there. Its not very exciting and appears to have been shot on video (I was watching a VCD so the picture was down graded a bit) in a manner that was strictly by the TV book of numbers. You can tell from my lack of excitement in writing about the film how happy the movie made me feel. If you're stuck on a plane or some where you're going to be a while and don't have a choice this is probably worth a shot. Given a choice there are probably better things you could be watching.
